Amalric II of Jerusalem

Amalric of Lusignan (also Aimerich, * 1145, † April 1, 1205 in Acre ) out of the house of Lusignan was from 1194 as Amalric I King of Cyprus, and from 1197 as Amalric II, King of Jerusalem.

Amalric was a son of the Crusader Hugo VIII, Lord of Lusignan, Count of La Marche and his wife Bourgogne from Rancon.

He came to the Holy Land in 1174, married Eschiva of Ramla, daughter of Baldwin of Ibelin, and entered the service of their aunt Agnes of Courtenay, the mother of King Baldwin IV of Jerusalem. 1175 to 1178 he was treasurer of Jerusalem. In 1179 he was constable of Jerusalem. 1193 gave him his brother Geoffrey of Lusignan, the County of Jaffa and Ascalon. With the death of his brother Guy of Lusignan in 1194, he became King of Cyprus.

He married in 1197 his second wife Queen Isabella I of Jerusalem, the widow of Henry of Champagne and was supported by the right of his wife King of Jerusalem.

As part of the German Crusade, he succeeded in 1198 to agree on a five -year truce with the Muslims, whom he had to thank the internal struggles between Saladin's brothers and sons for his inheritance substantially. The truce was disturbed by raids from both sides, but in 1204, when it became clear that the Fourth Crusade would not reach the Holy Land, extended by six years.

Amalric died in 1205, shortly after his son, and shortly before his wife. The Kingdom of Cyprus went to Hugo I, his son from his first marriage, the Kingdom of Jerusalem to Maria of Montferrat, Isabella's daughter from her marriage to Conrad of Montferrat.
