Amantaní

Amantani is an island in the Peruvian part of Lake Titicaca. The island is roughly circular and has an area of about 15 square kilometers.

In its two peaks, Pacha Tata ( Father Earth ) and Pachamama (Mother Earth), standing building from the time of the Incas or the Tiwanaku culture. Pacha Tata and Pacha Mama are over four thousand meters high and have the appearance of oversized hills.

Demography

According to a census in 1988, the island had 3,663 inhabitants, Quechua who live in eight villages. The Quechua (variant Qusqu - Qullaw ) is actively spoken by all age groups. Particularly among the young, many speak Spanish.

Topology

The slopes of the island are provided with stone terraces, on which are grown in manual labor, among others, wheat, quinoa and potatoes. As cattle graze alpacas in particular on the slopes. Due to the favorable climatic conditions and soil characteristics, the islanders have to drive over four thousand meters farming in a position to a height. So the summit regions of Pacha Tata and Pacha Mama be used for farming.

The temple ruins on the peaks are used every year on 20 January for the Island Festival. On that day a competition takes place. Half of the island's population is found on one of the two temples, and in each case a runner runs to a point between the two buildings. According to tradition is a victory for Pachamama ( for which one of the two peaks is ) bring a good harvest next year.

Amantani is also known for its textile craft.

On the island there is a small infirmary and a school.

Similar to Taquile and Amantani is organized as a cooperative, and a common council is elected annually. The municipality does not levy taxes, but municipal tasks are done ( in ancient Andean tradition ) in community work. There is not a hotel; Tourists are taught in private accommodation.

The island is car-free.

Amantani is also known as the "Island of Kantuta " because this plant grows abundantly on the island.
