Amarapura

Division

Amarapura ( Burmese: ဒ ခမရ ပူ ရ - Pali: City of Immortals ) is a town 11 km south of Mandalay in Myanmar. It has around 23,200 inhabitants. Administratively, the city is part of the Mandalay Division. Amarapura can be described as smaller fast-growing suburb of Mandalay.

History

Amarapura, south of Mandalay between the Ayeyarwady River and the Taungthaman lake. The place was in 1781 under King Bodawpaya to King capital after Sagaing and Innwa had been abandoned. In the period 1823-1841 Amarapura lost this status again Innwa, was under King Mindon but again the capital, until 1857 then Mandalay final status was awarded as the capital of the empire.

Attractions

  • U Bein Bridge: It is 1,200 meters, the longest teak bridge in the world. In the rainy season the level of the water is just below the catwalks of the bridge. It was built in 1784. Since repairs were hardly necessary.
  • Royal Palace: From the palace itself ruins are left. Some buildings of the palace grounds such as the pagodas and the tower are still standing.
  • Patodawgyi Pagoda: This pagoda with a 50 m high stupa dates back to 1820.
