Amasra (also Sesamos, Amastris ) is a Turkish port town on the coast of the Black Sea in the countryside Paphlagonia in the present province of Bartın. Tourism is the main source of income for the inhabitants.

Geography

Amasra is situated on a peninsula, on the island of Büyük Ada (German Big Island ), which is connected by a Roman-style, during the Byzantine era in the 9th century bridge with the city. Upstream of the city is an uninhabited island further, the " Rabbit Island" ( Tavşan Adası ). On the peninsula lie the ruined Byzantine citadel and the city wall.

History

The name comes from the Persian nobles Amasra Amastris († 284 BC), a subsidiary of Oxyathres, the brother of Darius III .. Through a merger of four villages Sesamos (on the site of today's Amasra ), Kytoros, Kromna and Tio ( synoecism ) founded the Persian princess 300 BC, the city named after her Amastris on the coast Paphlagonia. There they struck coins with the inscription Queen Amastris. When the sons of Amastris were old enough, they took over under the reign of its mother's government, but soon there was between them discord. Supposedly Amastris was 284 BC drowned at the instigation of her sons.
