Amazon black howler

The Amazonian Black Howler Monkey ( Alouatta nigerrima ) - not to be confused with the ( authentics ) Black howler monkeys - is a primate of the species of howler monkeys within the peg-tail monkeys ( Atelidae ). He lives in Brazil and is one of the least known members of its species.

The fur of these primates is black, his body is like that of all howlers relatively stocky. The tail is formed as a prehensile tail, at the bottom is located in the back of a hairless body. The limbs are long and strong.

Amazonian black howler monkeys live in the Brazilian states of Amazonas and Pará. Its distribution area lies mainly south of the Amazon between the Rio Madeira and the Rio Tapajós. They are forest dwellers that occur in rain, but also other forest types.

They are diurnal and arboreal and live in groups. These consist of one (rarely two) male, several females and their associated pups together. The typical for the genus roar is heard especially in the morning, it serves to point out strange animals on the whereabouts of their own group and their own territory. These animals are herbivores, they feed on leaves, fruits and flowers.
