Amazonis Planitia

Amazonis Planitia is a broad flat region on the planet Mars. It was named after the Amazons of Greek mythology.

The regional center is situated in 16 ° north latitude and 158 degrees west longitude, and has an area of about 2 million km2. It is located west of the extinct shield volcano Olympus Mons.

Amazonis Planitia originated in the geologically recent period of Martian origin, the Amazonian period that began 1.8 billion years. Through massive lava eruptions of the volcanoes of the Tharsis region -wide levels were trained. The formation of Amazonis Planitia should have been completed before about 100 million years ago.
