Ambato Department

The department Ambato lies in the center of the province of Catamarca in northwestern Argentina and is one of the 16 administrative units in the province.

It is bordered to the north by the Departamento Andalgalá and the Tucumán Province, on the east by the department of PACLIN, to the south by the departments Fray Mamerto Esquiú and Capayán and to the west by the Departamento Poman.

The capital of the department is La Puerta, which lies 46 kilometers from the provincial capital San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca.

Economy

The economy is based on livestock (cattle, horses, sheep and goats) and agriculture. Crops are mainly fodder crops, potatoes, stone fruits and nuts.
