Amberd

Amberd (Armenian: Անբերդ ) is a medieval, since 1236 partially destroyed fortress, about 6 km from the village of Byurakan at an altitude of 2300 m on the southern slope of Mount Aragats in Armenia. Amberd was also one of the medieval capitals of Armenia.

History

It is believed that the fortress of Kamsarakan prince was founded. Later it was bought by the Armenian rulers of Bagratides dynasty, which they converted into one of the main strongholds of the kingdom.

The church was built by Prince Vahram Vatchoutian of tufa in 1026.

For the first time, the fort was attacked in the 11th century by the Seljuks. In 1236 Amberd was due to a fire caused by the attacking Mongols destroyed and never rebuilt.

Fortress complex

Amberd is one of the rare witnesses of Armenian military architecture of the Middle Ages. The fortress, which was built on a mountain spur, was part of a defense system that controlled the level of Ararat.

In addition to the remains of the ramparts and the small Mother of God Church ( Surb Astvatsatsin ) are part of a three-story palace, one of two domes roofed bathhouse, a central heating system, water supply system, including cisterns, and receive a secret passage from the palace to the other buildings.
