Ambience (sound recording)

Atmosphere (Greek ἀτμός, Atmos " haze " ) and short form of atmosphere is a term from the fields of film, radio and television.

The sound design in film, radio and television is called diffuse background noise shortly atmosphere. The terms Ambi or Ambience also be used. The atmosphere conveys example, a spatial impression ( exterior, interior, room, rooms ), environmental impression (wind, birds, machinery) or the social context of an event (children laughter, football fans, etc.). Striking, superficial language or noises should not be present in an atmosphere, they should only represent an acoustic background image.

An atmosphere may be recorded on location with microphones or artificially assembled, such as when a foley or sound designer in several recording or editing steps simulates a tree in the wind or a storm.

An atmosphere may be optical ( in the film ) or acoustic ( the radio play ) under paint pictures or counterpoint. In the radio, especially in the radio play and the radio feature, Atmos produce an important spatial navigation aid for the audience and therefore are almost synonymous with original sound and music.

Even with pieces of music is sometimes worked with Atmos as ocean waves or with experimental sound mixtures that develop an artistic and creative effects along with the music. Muzak is a kind of musical atmosphere between everyday sounds. A style of music primarily composed of atmospheric sounds, is called Ambient.
