Ambrein is a triterpene alcohol. It is the main ingredient ambergris ( Ambra grisea ) of the sperm whale.

Ambrein was used as a fixative in perfumery. The connection is completely odorless, by oxidation, for example, by atmospheric oxygen, caused the actual odors, ambrox and ambrinol.

Ambrinol

The scent is between woody, dry, balsamic, slightly tobacco -like to a bouquet way with aphrodisiac impact. For the production of ambrox Ambrein is no longer needed today, it will be replaced as the starting material by sclareol from Salvia sclarea.
