Paula Modersohn -Becker saw together with Clara Westhoff in his art action for the first time the works of Cézanne and Paul Gauguin, who influenced her art development considerably.

Ambroise Vollard was also active as an author and publisher. Due to its manifold relations with the avant-garde French art, he managed to attract the best painter of his time as a book illustrator. The laid at his works are among the most important achievements in the field of bibliophile book design.

Ambroise Vollard died in 1939 at the age of 74 years at the Clinique des Franciscains in Versailles at the consequences of a car accident that had occurred the previous day. The funeral ceremony was held in the Paris church of Sainte Clothilde on July 28. The art dealer rests in the cemetery at Bagneux near Paris.

In 2010, an auction of that part of his collection was held in London and Paris, which had been kept in a vault of a Parisian bank since 1939. Presentations ( selection)

Noteworthy is the large number of the art dealer representing portraits whose comparison allows conclusions to be drawn, in what proportion of the respective artists stood to the dealer and in what light he saw it or wanted to appear. Among the works of Cézanne from 1899 is demonstrably a commissioned work. Under what circumstances caused the other portraits, has not been clarified so far.
