AMD PowerPlay

The technology was first used in the Mobility Radeon GPUs to reduce the power consumption of notebook PCs. PowerPlay includes several technologies, such as dynamic clock speed of the graphics chip, while the notebook is not connected to a power supply and dimming of the LCD monitor. The last revision is ATI PowerPlay 7.0.

From the Radeon HD 3800 series ATI PowerPlay was implemented in desktop graphics cards to reduce the power consumption of the GPU. In 2D mode, it is thereby possible to reduce the speed of the GPU fan to decrease the volume, and to reduce the temperature of the graphics chips.

The main difference between the implementations on desktop and mobile graphics cards, is the circumcision of the desktop versions of the notebook - specific functions (variable LCD light ). The PowerPlay technology for desktop Radeons also used three power-saving scenarios; Normal mode ( 2D mode ), a hybrid mode and a game mode ( 3D mode ), as opposed to two scenarios (connected to a power supply or not ) in notebooks. Tests show that the core clock a RV670 GPU can be lowered at least to 300 MHz with PowerPlay enabled.
