Amé Pictet

Amé Jules Pictet ( born July 12, 1857 in Geneva, † March 11, 1937 ) was a Swiss chemist.

Pictet received his doctorate in August 1879 by Kekulé. From 1894 to 1932 he held a chair at the University of Geneva as a professor. In 1889 he synthesized the phenanthridine from benzalaniline by pyrolysis in the glow tube. In 1903 he synthesized the first time the nicotine. In the field of carbohydrate chemistry, synthesis of sucrose it from its components glucose and fructose succeeded for the first time in 1928.

The Pictet -Spengler reaction for the synthesis of isoquinoline is named after him.
