Amédée Borrel

Amédée Borrel (* 1867 in Cazouls -les- Beziers, ibid † 1936) was a French physician and bacteriologist.

Borrel studied natural sciences at the University of Montpellier and received his PhD in 1890. Subsequently he went to Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov to the Institut Pasteur in Paris. He worked there with research on tuberculosis and with the search for a vaccine against the plague. In 1919 he became professor of bacteriology at the University of Strasbourg.

He examined inter alia caused by bacteria animal diseases and transmission mechanisms and therapeutic options in viral cancers. Named after him, the Borrelia.
