Amédée-François Lamy

François Amédée Joseph Lamy ( born February 7, 1858 in Mougins, † April 22, 1900 at the Battle of Kousséri, French Equatorial Africa ) was a French colonialist and officer.

Life

Early on Lamy interested in military and colonial subjects. Aged 10, he was inducted into the National Prytanée militaire, military school in France. From 1877 he attended the military academy Saint- Cyr. In 1879, he appeared as a sous- lieutenant in the 1st Regiment of the Security Group of Algeria ( 1er régiment of tirailleurs algériens ) a. Lamy participated in the exploration and colonization of the Sahara in Tunisia, and Tonkin, where he worked from 1884 to 1886. Back in Algeria, he was commander of the Division of Algiers. Lamy was his life especially fascinated by the Algerian desert landscape, which prompted him to numerous expeditions.

On April 22, 1900 Lamy led French colonial troops in the victorious battle of Kousséri for them against the Arab usurper of Bornu, Rabih az- Zubayr. Lamy as well as his adversary Rabeh found in the battle to death. By 1973, the capital of Chad, N'Djamena bore his name as " Fort Lamy ". In Paris, a street is named after him.
