American Academy of Sleep Medicine

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine ( AASM ) is a US-based medical professional society in the field of sleep medicine. It was founded in 1975, has about 10,000 members and has its headquarters in Darien (Illinois ).

The AASM operates a process for accreditation of sleep laboratories and sleep medicine facilities, which are now using about 2,000 facilities. Objective of the procedure is to secure and improve the quality of patient care in sleep medicine. The first accredited sleep laboratory of the U.S. is as of 27 April 1977, the "Sleep - Wake Disorders Center " of the Department of Neurology at the Montefiore Medical Center in New York.
