The American Cocker Spaniel is one of the FCI ( No. 167, Gr. 8, sec 2) recognized dog breed in the USA.

Origin and History

The American Cocker Spaniel has been bred from the English Cocker Spaniel. The time when the first English Cocker Spaniels came to the U.S., is unknown - it is certain that in 1930 the deviation from the original type was already so great that the dogs were handled as a separate breed. 1940, a separate standard for the breed was established; Eleven years later followed by recognition by the FCI. The most obvious changes are the luxuriant coat and rounded skull.

Description

The American Cocker Spaniel is the smallest member (up to 38 cm) in the group of spaniels. It has a sturdy, compact body, a refined head, with the overall dog in complete balance. The measurement from the sternum to the ischium is slightly longer than the measurement from the highest point of the withers to the ground.

The body is slightly sloping to the muscular hindquarters, the chest is deep, its lowest point no higher than the elbow, front sufficiently wide for adequate heart and lung. The coat should be short and fine on the head, body of medium length with enough undercoat to protect. The ears, chest, abdomen and the backs of the legs are well feathered.

The coat is either monochromatic or multicolored. Solid color is black or black with tan markings ( something white is on the chest and / or neck allowed). Other single color is common that varies from the lightest cream to darkest red, including brown and brown with tan points. Multi-colored, it has two or more clear, well-demarcated from each color, one must be white. Cream to darkest red vary, brown / white and " mold " ( roan ), including any of these color combinations with tan markings. The ears are lobed, long, leathery, well feathered, not carried above the line of the lower eye area.

American Cocker Spaniel can be up to 12 years and older.

Use

Due to the lush fur of the American Cocker Spaniel is hardly useful as a hunting dog. Nevertheless, he still has his hunting instinct, so he needs plenty of exercise. Today these dogs are pure show dogs and are usually kept as a companion and family dog.

Nature

American Cocker considered to be very happy, but also lively gentle dogs that are great with children and understand very well with other dogs. However, his hunting instinct requires a consistent education.
