American Council of Learned Societies

The American Council of Learned Societies ( ACLS ) was founded in 1919 to represent the United States within the Union Académique International (International Union of Academies ). The founding members of the ACLS were representatives of thirteen scientific associations, who were convinced that a merger of these scientific organizations at the end of the First World War would represent the democratic ethos and the intellectual aspirations of the United States best. Called The Articles of ACLS " the promotion of humanistic research in all fields of the humanities and social sciences" as the main task of the ACLS. 1926 awarded the ACLs scholarships to the value of $ 4,500, in 2012 this amount had increased to more than 15 million dollars.
