The American Football Conference ( AFC) is one of two Conferences of the National Football League ( NFL).

It emerged from the independent American Football League (AFL ), which was founded in 1960 as a rival league to the old NFL. Thereupon split the Fanlager and to determine the true champion, the two champions appeared in January 1967 for the first Super Bowl (then not officially called so ) against each other. After the merger, the new big NFL in 1970, the Conference names were virtually self Thus, it was from the old NFL the second Conference, the National Football Conference ( NFC). In the NFC initially played 13 former NFL teams in the AFC played ten AFL teams and three NFL teams.

This is the reason why the NFL is not divided like the other major U.S. sports in the Western Conference and the Eastern Conference, but in this way. This also determines the location of the teams that come from all parts of the U.S. in both Conferences. For example, play the New York Giants in the NFC and the New York Jets in the AFC.

Team

In both Conferences play 16 teams which are divided into four divisions. The classification of the divisions is in contrast to the Conferences, largely due to the geographical location of the teams. Due to new teams or relocation, it can also come here to exceptions or lead to shifts between the Divisions. Both Conferences are organized into the Divisions East, North, South and West.
