American Group Psychotherapy Association

The American Group Psychotherapy Association ( AGPA ), dt: American Association for Group Psychotherapy, is the American counterpart to the London Group Analytic Society and the International Association for Group Analysis in Bonn.

Was founding president of the group analyst Samuel Slavson. At the time of its inception, the AGPA and Slavson were in direct competition with the American Society for Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama ( ASGPP ) and its founder Jacob L. Moreno. The AGPA insisted on a strict analytic tradition, while the ASGPP integrated dynamic and theatrical elements in their canon. The AGPA organizes annual conferences and meetings, sets educational standards and ethical guidelines laid, networked group therapists throughout the United States and informs the public about group therapy and provider.

The Foundation Group Psychotherapy Foundation ( GPF) is linked institutionally with the AGPA and awards numerous scholarships each year and two prestigious awards, the

  • Alonso Award for Excellence in the group dynamics and the
  • Aaron Stein Memorial Fund Award for organizations that use group therapy in a particularly creative way.
