American Independent Party

The American Independent Party is a right-wing paleoconservative Party in the USA. It was founded in 1967 by Bill and Eileen Shearer. Became famous for the party when she nominated the racist governor of Alabama, George Wallace as a presidential candidate in the presidential elections of 1968. In 1976 the party split into the modern American Independent Party and the American Party. Between 1992 and 2008, the party was also the California branch of the Constitution Party, until it came to the separation of this party in 2008.

Early history

1968 nominated the American Independent Party presidential candidate George Wallace and the retired Air Force General of the Air Force, Curtis LeMay E., as candidate for vice-president. Wallace did not represent the party in all states. In Connecticut, he went to the " George Wallace Party". The duo Wallace / LeMay reached 13.5 % of the votes of the population and 46 electoral votes.

1969 certain representatives from 40 states, the American Party to the successor of the American Independent Party. In some states such as Connecticut, the American Party was officially registered as the American Conservative Party. The modern " American Conservative Party" has with the party of the Wallace era nothing in common. The official flag was adopted in 1970. After the split in 1976

In 1976 the party split up into more moderate American Party, the ' included more conservatives from the northern states and supporters Schmitz, and the American Independent Party, which focused on the Deep South. Both parties nominated in the following years various presidential candidates.

In the 1980s, Bill Shearer led the American Independent Party in the Populist Party. Since 1992, the American Independent Party of California branch of the Constitution Party, formerly known as U.S. Taxpayers Party is known. 2008 there was a spin-off of the AIP with the Constitution Party.

Dispute over the presidency in 2008
