American Megatrends

American Megatrends Inc. (AMI ) is an American manufacturer of computer hardware and software. AMI specializes in the product segment IBM - PC compatible computer and produced for this segment hardware and software ( firmware). The company was founded in 1985 by Pat Sarma and S. Shankar. The company is headquartered in Norcross, Georgia.

The company began as a manufacturer of motherboards ( motherboard ) for x86 -based Systems and positioned its products in the high- end segment. The first customer was the former PCs Ltd, later renamed the Dell computer.

In the years following AMI shifted the hardware and motherboard production gradually toward Taiwan to established there ODM manufacturers. AMI used his time already strong customer base and focused successfully on the BIOS programming and distribution of these products. Soon were virtually all known motherboard manufacturer to the customers of the company. In addition to the focus on the BIOS development began with the development of other sectors. These include, from 1992 Motherboards for servers, storage controllers were added in 1995 and from 1998 also additional cards for remote management.

The most successful products of AMI include the MegaRAID RAID controllers developed from 1996 onwards. A newly introduced in hardware RAID function for online expansion of configured RAID volume helped the MegaRAID systems within a short time to significant market success. Many OEMs such as Hewlett- Packard and Dell were customers and ensured good numbers. AMI broke up in 2001 by its RAID division and sold the product range to LSI Logic.

Today, AMI is a technology company focused on the business with OEM customers. The current product lines include the AMIBIOS ( a BIOS), Aptio ( a successor to the AMIBIOS8 after the UEFI standard), hardware diagnostic software, firmware for the Remote Access area, motherboards, SGPIO Backplane Controller, NAS and SAN storage systems, and other products and services.
