American Tobacco Company

The American Tobacco Company was one of the world's largest manufacturers of tobacco products.

The company was founded in 1890 by James Buchanan Duke by merging a number of U.S. tobacco manufacturers including Allen and Ginter and Goodwin & Company. Already in the founding of the stock index, the Dow Jones Industrial Average in 1896 was American Tobacco is one of 12 members. The acquisition of over 200 competitors, including the Lucky Strike Company, the Group obtained a dominant position. This resulted in 1907, to initiate proceedings on the basis of the Sherman Antitrust Act, which led to the unbundling of the Group in 1911. As part of its share of the joint venture British American Tobacco was sold, and, among others, the subsidiary Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company and Lorillard split. Due to the increasing expansion of activities away from the tobacco processing the holding American Brands was founded in 1986, which was again renamed Fortune Brands in 1997. This sold its nucleus American Tobacco 1994 to the former subsidiary British American Tobacco (BAT ).
