American Women's Voluntary Services

The American Women's Voluntary Service Organization or AWVS was a volunteer auxiliary military service, were used in the American women.

It was in 1940 in Ohio Alice Throckmorton (* March 8, 1886 New York City, in Baltimore in 1968 † 25 October ) was founded. During construction, Throckmorton oriented to the Women's Voluntary Services in the UK. There women were trained in professions that were closed to them in time of peace by patriarchy. Women were trained as a mechanic, care workers, first responders and civil defense helpers.

They were used together with the Red Cross Society of United States. They organized a babysitter for defense workers working on box cookers and drove ambulance from the military vehicle park.

In February 1945, management of the AWVS by historian Elizabeth Bancroft Schlesinger ( 1886-1977 ) was adopted. Since 1947 the organization has been certified by the Committee on Un-American Activities and existed until 1968.
