Amfreville (Manche)

Amfreville is a rural French village with 291 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Manche in Basse-Normandie region.

Geography

Amfreville is located in northern France on the Cotentin peninsula on the river Merderet, about 90 kilometers north- west of Caen, capital of Basse -Normandie Region, about 47 kilometers northwest of Saint- Lô, the seat of the prefecture of the department of Manche, about 30 kilometers southeast of Cherbourg -Octeville, the seat of sub-prefecture of the arrondissement Cherbourg, and 5.6 kilometers west of Sainte- Mère- Église, the capital of the Canton of Sainte -Mere -Eglise and the municipal Association of Sainte- Mère- Église, at an average height of 16 meters above sea ​​level. The Mairie stands at a height of 21 meters. Neighboring communities of Amfreville are Gourbesville the northwest, Fresville in the northeast, head -du -Pont in the southeast and Picauville in the south. History

1793 Amfreville received in the wake of the French Revolution ( 1789-1799 ) the administrative status of a municipality and 1801 by the administrative reform under Napoleon Bonaparte the right to local self-government.

1812 Cauquigny was incorporated.

Culture and sights

The parish church of Saint- Férréol in the district Cauquigny was built in the 12th century but rebuilt in the 18th century. During World War II (1939-1945), the church was badly damaged and used for church services until 1979 after a failed restoration.

The parish church of Saint -Martin is dedicated to Martin of Tours. It was built at the beginning of the 13th century. In the 16th century the chancel was rebuilt, the roof vault of the choir was renewed in 1706. Nave and bell tower were restored in the late 18th century.

First fortifications at the site of the castle of Amfreville were built in the reign of William the Conqueror ( Duke of Normandy from 1035 ). Building received are the gateway, part of the building and the chapel. These buildings were built in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. A new residential building was built around 1740 but abandoned and destroyed during the French Revolution. The outbuildings were renovated in the 20th century in part.
