Amitav Ghosh

Amitav Ghosh ( Bengali: অমিতাভ ঘোষ, Amitabh Gho; born July 11, 1956 in Kolkata ( Calcutta), West Bengal ) is an Indian writer.

Life

Ghosh spent his childhood in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and North India. He studied in Delhi history and was active opposition in the reign of Indira Gandhi. At Oxford he earned his doctorate as a social anthropologist and then taught himself at a university in Delhi. Ghosh lives in New York. He writes in English; both deemed novel and non- fictitious essays.

His novels and essays deal mainly with his homeland, the Indian Subcontinent, he traveled frequently. He was known primarily for his settled in colonial Burma novel The Glass Palace ( The Glass Palace ). For this novel he explored several years the lives and history of India and Burma.

Honors

In 2007 he was honored with the Padma Shri Order.
