Amity is a town in Allegany County, New York, United States. During the 2000 census, the town had 2,245 inhabitants. The name Amity means friendship.

History

The city was founded in 1830 from two districts ( Angelica and Scio ), where the first settlers already in 1804 settled.

Geography

The city covers 89.7 km ², of which 89.5 km ² landmass and 0.2 km ² water.

The Genesee River flows northward through the city.

Demography

The 2,245 residents living in 885 households and 601 families. The population density is 25.1 inhabitants / km ².

Trivia

The city was known from the movie "Jaws ". In fact, Amity, New York, however, is not on the coast. The island of Amity Iceland shown in the film is purely fictional, the shooting took place on Martha 's Vineyard.
