Amleto Giovanni Cicognani

Amleto Giovanni Cicognani, Cardinal (born 24 February 1883 in Brisighella, Ravenna, Italy Province; † 17 December 1973 in the Vatican City) and was Cardinal Secretary of State Cardinal Dean of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Cicognani studied at the seminary in Faenza and empfimg on September 23, 1905, the Bishop of Faenza, Gioachino Cantagalli, the ordination. Until 1910 he continued his studies in Rome, where he received his doctorate in Catholic theology, philosophy and canon law.

Since 10 May 1910, he served as ex officio proceedings at the Congregation for the Discipline of the Sacraments, and was on March 28, 1917 secret chamberlain of the Pope, who appointed him on 19 May 1923 the Pontifical House prelates. From 1921 to 1932 he was a lecturer at the University of Saint Apollinare, was on 16 December 1922 Adjunct of Consistorial and on February 16, 1928 Assessor at the Congregation for the Oriental Churches.

Starting in 1924, entrusted with various missions abroad, he was on 17 March 1933 by Pope Pius XI. appointed apostolic delegate in the United States and Titular Archbishop of Laodicea in Phrygia and received on 23 April 1933 the Secretary of the Congregation for Bishops, Cardinal Raffaele Carlo Rossi OCD episcopal ordination. Co-consecrators were the Titular Archbishop of Nicaea, Giuseppe Pizzardo, and the secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, Archbishop Carlo Salotti. The Office of the Apostolic Delegate, he practiced for over 25 years from, longer than any of his predecessors.

Pope John XXIII. took him on 15 December 1958 as cardinal priest with the titular church of San Clemente to the College of Cardinals. Cicognani was the second member of his family, which received the cardinal purple. His brother Gaetano Cicognani was already five years earlier became a cardinal.

Since 14 November 1959 he was secretary of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, and was appointed on 12 August 1961, Cardinal Secretary of State. Paul VI. introduced him to on May 7, 1968 President of the Administratio Patrimonii Sedis Apostolicae. Shortly thereafter, took place on May 23, 1968 to his appointment as Cardinal Bishop of Frascati.

On April 30, 1969, he resigned from his previous office. On 24 March 1972 he was dean of the College of Cardinals and thus also Cardinal Bishop of Ostia.

Amleto Giovanni Cigognani died on 17 December 1973 in Vatican City, and was buried in the church of San Clemente in Rome.
