Location

The saddle is in the immediate vicinity of the border between Germany and Austria, the pass itself, however, is about 250 m south of the border and so completely in the Tyrolean area. The pass runs between the high board ( 2,082 m) in the northwest and the glow peak ( 1,929 m) in the north and the Kreuzspitz ( 2,185 m) in the southeast and the vulture heads (up to 2,161 m) in the south-west, of which the three mountains mentioned first rise in Germany.

History

The road over the Ammersattel was built in the 19th century under King Maximilian II of Bavaria and was inaugurated in 1852. On the construction of the road is a memorial in the village of Plansee, which was built there in 1872.

Traffic

The over the Ammersattel road leading ( in Germany: Bavarian State Street in 2060, and in Austria Tyrolean Provincial Road 255) connects Ettal near Oberammergau ( in the district of Garmisch -Partenkirchen ) and Reutte ( in the district of Reutte ).

These two border towns connecting with each other to overcome on the small mountain pass up to 12% gradient or slope, where one has to cover a total of around 35 km of roads. The most curve quiet side street, which is slightly curvier on top of the pass, branches off in Germany at Ettal of the B 23 and in Austria Reutte of the Fern Pass Road ( B179 ). It runs from the northeast through the Graswangtal along the Linder, the seeps here partly in well drained, calcareous subsoil extending the upper reaches of the River Ammer, about Graswang, passing the castle Linderhof up to the pass. On the Austrian side it leads through the valley of the Plansee Lake Plansee down to Reutte. Thus, the Ammersattel connects the Ammer Valley and the easternmost of Ettal Loisachtal with the Lech Valley.
