Ammonium hydrogen sulfate is an ammonium salt of sulfuric acid. It has the formula NH4HSO4.

Production and representation

Ammonium hydrogen sulphate is formed upon decomposition of ammonium sulfate at temperatures above 100 ° C, ammonia is released. Ammonium hydrogen sulfate is produced in large quantities as deposition products in activated carbon filter systems for sulfur - containing industrial waste gases. The filters are fed with oxygen, ammonia and water vapor, containing sulfuric acid, the hydrogen sulfate and ammonium sulfate occur:

Properties

Ammonium hydrogen sulfate forms white monoclinic, hygroscopic crystals. The substance decomposes with sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides and ammonia are released at temperatures above 120 ° C. The solution of 100 g of ammonium bisulfate in 1 liter of water at 20 ° C shows a pH of 1, that is in the strongly acidic range.

Use

Use it takes for the production of ammonium, as an additive in nitrogen fertilizer, to fight forest fires as a viscous solution / suspension in water and for the production of ammonium alum and flame retardants for cellulose products.

Safety

Ammonium hydrogen sulfate is classified as slightly hazardous for water (WGK 1).
