Ammonium formate is the ammonium salt of formic acid. It is in the form of a white, hygroscopic powder having the empirical formula CH5NO2.
Production
Ammonium formate can be produced by the neutralization of ammonia with formic acid:
Properties
Ammonium formate is a good water-soluble salt, which forms colorless, monoclinic and deliquescent crystals.
Aqueous solutions react almost neutral. The pH of a 5% solution is 6.5-7.
Ammonium melts at 116 ° C and decomposes at 180 ° C. Like other ammonium salts also, ammonium formate releases when moving with strong bases ammonia.
Use
Ammonium formate is used mainly in the preparative organic chemistry, for example, for the preparation of amines according to the Leuckart -Wallach.
Ammonium formate is also a component of solutions with a reduced freezing point for the aftertreatment of exhaust gases to reduce the emission of nitrogen oxides (trade name Denoxium -30).
Furthermore, ammonium formate used in analytical chemistry for separation of base metals from the precious metals. In the glow discharge may arise from ammonium amino acids.
