Ammonium thiocyanate (obsolete: ammonium thiocyanate ) is the ammonium salt of Thiocyanwasserstoffsäure (obsolete: hydrogen thiocyanate acid, HSCN ) with the formula NH4SCN.
Properties
Ammonium thiocyanate is colorless and odorless, hygroscopic, readily soluble in water and ethanol crystals with a density of 1.3 g/cm3.
Production
Ammonium thiocyanate may be prepared under pressure and elevated temperature of carbon disulfide and ammonia:
Use
It is used as a stabilizer for photographic developers, as a vulcanization accelerator, an accelerator for mortar and concrete, and herbicides.
In analytical chemistry, it serves as the detection of iron ( III) ions. The very intense red color in aqueous solution is due to the presence of undissociated [ Fe ( SCN ) 3 ( H2O ) 3] in addition to the ion [ Fe ( SCN ) 2 ( H2O ) 4] and [ Fe ( SCN ) ( H2O) 5 ] 2 due.
Properties
It is deposited at a temperature of from 70 ° C partially in thiourea, analogous to Wöhler 's synthesis of urea from ammonium cyanate. By concentrating an aqueous solution, thiourea can win.
