Amnatos

Amnatos (Greek Αμνάτος ( f sg ) ) is a town in the municipality of Arkadi in the Municipality of Rethymno on the Greek Mediterranean island of Crete. Because of the conservation status of Venetian houses, their historical and architectural value and the rural character of the site is a listed building.

Location

Amnatos is located about 14 kilometers southeast of Rethymno in 320 meters height. The community of count next to the village itself the places Kapsaliana ( Καψαλιανά ) 800 meters to the northeast, Pikris ( Πίκρης ) about 1.6 kilometers to the northeast and the Arkadi Monastery 2.8 km south.

History

The earliest mention as Amnato comes from the Venetian period. During Ottoman times, the place was first inhabited by Orthodox Christians and Muslims.

The rural community Amnatos ( Κοινότητα Αμνάτου Kinotita Amnatou ) was created in 1927 through the spin-off of four villages and the monastery of Arkadi from the former rural community Kyrianna. Apart from minor changes, the rural community had to the implementation of local government reform after the Kapodistrias program in 1997 inventory. Along with eleven other rural communities it merged municipality of Arkadi ( Δήμος Αρκαδίου ). As part of the administrative reform of 2010, this went on in the town of Rethymno, since Amnatos has the status of a village ( Τοπική Κοινότητα Topiki Kinotita ).
