Amnon Yariv

Amnon Yariv (* April 1930 in Tel Aviv) is an Israeli professor of applied physics and electrical engineering at the California Institute of Technology. He works there with the development of semiconductor lasers and other light sources, photonic crystals, optical storage media, WDM filters, among others

Biography

After his time in the Israeli army Yariv began in September 1950 an electrical engineering degree at the Technion in Haifa.

Beginning of 1951 he moved to the U.S. and began studying at San Mateo Junior College, changed after one semester but at the University of California, Berkeley. He reached there, the Bachelor of Science in 1954, Master of Science in 1956, Ph.D. In 1958.

From 1959 he worked at Bell Laboratories. In 1964, he moved finally to Caltech, where he freelanced as a professor since 1966.

Yariv is co-founder of Ortel Corporation Company ( founded in 1979, acquired in 2000 by Lucent ) and Orbits Lightwave, Inc. ( founded in 1999 ).
