Amos Masondo

Amos Masondo Nkosiyakhe (* April 21, 1953 in Louwsburg ) is a South African politician. He is a member of the ANC and since December 2000 Mayor of Johannesburg.

Life

Masondo was born in the former province of Natal, but grew up in the township of Soweto. He became a member of the student movement SASM in 1972 and was involved from 1974 in political underground activities. Masondo but was soon arrested and imprisoned in the years 1975-1982 on Robben Iceland. After his release, he joined the " Soweto Civic Association " at ( SCA), a local civil rights organization. At the same time he was also in the " Committee of Ten" active, a group of activists who after the riots of 1976 took a leading role in time. Furthermore, Masondo was in the years 1981-1985 in the union " General and Allied Worker's Union " ( GAWU ) active from 1983 to organizational function. In the same year he founded the " United Democratic Front " (UDF), which became one of the most important anti-apartheid organizations.

From June 1985 to March 1986 and from July 1986 to July 1989 Masondo was again in custody. In the period following the end of apartheid was introduced, in this transitional phase, he worked from 1989 to 1993 at the Confederation of Trade Unions Congress of South African Trade Unions ( COSATU ). From 1990 on, since the legalization of the ANC, Masondo was active in the provincial and took over last year, the 1994 elections coordinative tasks.
