Ampass

Ampass is a municipality with 1688 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Innsbruck Land of the federal state of Tyrol in Austria. The Ampasser landmark is the Plague, also called quarter column, which is also seen on the coat of arms. The municipality is located in the judicial district of Hall in Tirol.

Geography

Ampass lies south-east of Innsbruck in the eastern highlands. In the north of the border at the Inn runs, bordered to the west Ampass directly to Innsbruck, which is about 8 kilometers away. The village center is located in a sort of basin.

History

Ampass lies on the ancient salt route from Hall to Matrei, east of Innsbruck on the south bank of the Inn, to which the salt obtained in the Hall valley was transported to the south. These salt transports reached its peak around 1490.

Was first documented in 1145 as Ampass Ambanes (Celtic: "Between two streams "). However Prehistoric finds evidence already from an early colonization, the oldest among them are from the 15th century BC. Particularly rich finds afforded the Iron Age shrine at Demlfeld.

A 1254 erected, 1.9 meter high granite milestone should have marked the boundary of the parish Wilten and still stands in its original location.

As an independent community Ampass is first mentioned in 1312 in the Inn Valley tax book.

Also in Ampass battles have taken place in the Tyrolean struggle for freedom in 1809, the Tyrolean freedom fighter Kaspar Sautner was Ampasser. According to him, a trail is named around Ampass.

Parish Church of St John the Baptist

The parish comprises a church building and located on the top of the bell tower Kirchbühels. In that tower to heavy for the normal church bell in 1739 housed.
