Ampato

The Ampato is a dormant 6288 -meter-high stratovolcano in the Andes in southern Peru and is located about 100 km northwest of Arequipa. He is part of a 20 km long north -suede chain of three large stratovolcanoes. At the northern end is the extinct 6025 m high Nevado Hualca Hualca, in the middle of the 5976 m high active Sabancaya and at the southern end of the Ampato. He became known as the site where the mummy Juanita.

History

In September 1995, the American archaeologist and mountaineer Dr. Johan Reinhard and a native of Arequipa mountain guide Miguel Zárate discovered a pre-Columbian burial ground on the Ampato. Through the ashes of the volcano erupted near Sabancaya the glacier was heavily melted and had exposed the archaeological remains. Below the summit of Ampatos they found the frozen and mummified body of a 12-14 year-old Inca girl who had offered there as a human sacrifice 1440-1450. Probably it was first stunned and then killed by a blow on the head. In October 1995 and in December 1997 found expeditions, led by Johan Reinhard and Peruvian archaeologist Jose Antonio Chavez, three other mummies. Since 1998, the mummy, which is called Juanita, be seen in the Museum of Andean Sanctuaries.

Climbing opportunities

Mostly Ampato is climbed from the east side, you need to depending on acclimatization and conditioning 2-4 days. After that, the time information is directed.
