Description

Vegetative characteristics

Diss is a perennial herbaceous plant that forms large clumps and reaches stature heights of 1 to 3 feet. The leaves are up to 1 meter long, 7 mm wide, coarse, ribbed very rough and strong. Later, the leaf edges are rolled. The ligule is 8 to 15 millimeters long, lanceolate and ciliate at the edge.

Generative features

The inflorescence is a richly branched, up to 50 centimeters long and slightly einseitswendige panicle. The stalked spikelets are 10 to 15 millimeters long and two to fünfblütig. Often, the glumes are purple. The lemmas are hairy on the back.

The flowering period extends from April to June.

The chromosome number is 2n = 48

Occurrence

Diss thrives in the western Mediterranean in Garigues and maquis. In Europe, the species is found in Spain, France, Italy and Greece, and on the Balearic Islands, in front of Sardinia and Corsica.

The first description was in 1789 under the name ( basionym ) Arundo mauritanica by Jean Louis Marie Poiret in Voyage en Barbarie, 2, S, 104 The genus Ampelodesmos in 1827 by Johann Heinrich Friedrich Link in Hortus Botanicus Regius Berolinensis, Volume 1, p 136 positioned. The new combination to Ampelodesmos mauritanicus ( Poir. ) T.Durand & Schinz was published in 1894 by Théophile Alexis Durand and Schinz in Conspectus Florae Africae, 5, p 874.
