Amprion GmbH is a German transmission system operators (TSOs ) to the Energy Industry Act ( Energy Act ) for the electricity sector. The company, which was created as part of the RWE Group, employs approximately 850 employees, its headquarters is located in Dortmund.

The name Amprion draws on amps for power and vision. The A company logo is light blue represented as an arc.

Main owner of Amprion is a consortium of financial investors led by Commerz Real, a subsidiary of Commerzbank. Main parties are still MEAG ( Munich Re and ERGO ), Swiss Life, Talanx and medical care works of Westphalia -Lippe and Brandenburg.

The former sole owner RWE only holds a direct interest of 25.1 %, as well as, a transitional indirect stake of about 10%, to be delivered in the medium term (September 2011).

History

Amprion was created in 2003 under the company RWE transport Strom GmbH as a subsidiary of RWE AG. Aim and objective of the company was the bundling of all activities of the RWE Group around the high voltage grid. After the founding of the Company as an Independent Transmission Operator ( Independent Transmission Operator ) was designed on the basis of the third EU internal market package. On 1 September 2009, the name was changed to Amprion.

The sale of 74.9% of Amprion shares by RWE for a purchase price of € 1 billion to a consortium of infrastructure funds announced in June 2011 and completed in September 2011.

Activities

With a length of about 11,000 km Amprion has the longest high-voltage grid in Germany. The network area is mainly in the west and the southwest of Germany.

From the System Control Networks ( formerly: main control center ) on the site of the substation Brauweiler and the two lower-level group switching lines in Hoheneck and Rommerskirchen the entire transmission system of the company is monitored and controlled remotely.

Via its own network, Amprion is responsible for the coordination of multi-unit operation in Germany as well as the focal point north for the northern part of the European grid, which the countries of Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Romania, Slovak Republic, Czech Republic and Hungary includes.
