AMPRNet

Hamnet (High Speed Amateur Radio Multimedia NETwork ) is a system designed by radio amateurs radio- based network, which will serve as a powerful backbone for the already available infrastructure of the amateur radio service and enable new applications. It is intended a gradual substitution of the existing packet radio network.

Objectives

Hamnet is a network of automatically operating amateur radio stations and that case, the composite on local link routes or a region or country goes beyond; there are the networks of different countries are connected together, so that an international basis for applications and users can develop.

Common to all networks following objectives:

  • To promote the communication by radio amateurs with each other and the Self and so awaken and maintain the enthusiasm for the technology of data transmission via radio links.
  • Radio amateurs to motivate cost hardware and free software for highly efficient modulation schemes to develop high bitrate, possibly in cooperation with universities in technical and scientific investigations.
  • Supra-regional projects, which provide participants with knowledge and experience in IT basics, wave propagation, antenna technology and filter technology, allow.
  • To create synergies between old and young ( knowledge transfer, site access, statics).
  • To substitute the existing narrowband FSK packet radio network successively or supplement.
  • To allow radio amateurs in the final a Hamnet access with high bit rates.
  • In case of emergency: the provision of a high data transmission capacity for the forces as a backup to commercial networks.

Technology

Hamnet works based on the Internet protocol suite, so that commercial for radio communications wireless router - can be used - in some cases with modifications. Besides its own hardware and firmware for this purpose has been developed, which will enable, for example, involve the packet radio network widespread RMNC digipeater. The transfer rates are reported as 1 to 17 MBit / s. As frequency range for the link connections, the 6- inch band or the ISM band at 5.7 GHz is used mainly. The user accesses are usually in the 2.3 - to 2.4 - GHz range.

Hamnet in Germany

In particular, packet radio digipeater, voice mailboxes, FM relay stations, ATV converter, D-STAR relays and paging transmitters are involved in the current sample and construction phase. The official launch and the presentation of the German project were made on the amateur radio exhibition and conference INTERRADIO on 31 October 2009 in Hanover under the name Hamnet 2.0, accompanied by corresponding lectures. In a further phase to club and school stations, as well as user accesses are possible.

In southern Bavaria there first Hamnet digipeater, which are based on the situation in Austria.

In western Germany, the construction of the Lower Rhine and in the Ruhr metropolitan areas, Dusseldorf, Cologne -Aachen is being driven.

Most German subnets are already connected to each other via VPN tunnel or over radio links. Over several transitions also came the merger of the Hamnet in Austria, Italy and Switzerland. The coordination and allocation of the necessary for the technical operation of AS numbers and IP networks is carried out by the "DL IP coordination in the AMPR -Net "

Hamnet in Austria

The project is operated since 2005 by members of the ÖVSV and originally had the name ALAN. After some local tests, and the recognition of the global importance of this new network was first introduced in 2008 in Vienna as Hamnet. The name for this project has its origins in Salzburg.

Today there is a functioning network with link routes, which connect all the provinces together, and numerous user accounts. As node computers come Routerboards the manufacturer Mikrotik used. Many packet-radio - links are connected through the Hamnet. In addition, there are other applications, for example, webcams, weather stations, Web Server and propagation predictions.

Trivia

Hamnet was also the name of the Son of playwright William Shakespeare.
