Ampsivarii

The root of the Ampsivarier ( Amsivarier, Germanic " Ems - Men", Latin: Ansibarii, Greek: Ἀνσιβαριοί ) was a Germanic tribe on the river Ems in today's lower Saxony, who was mentioned by Tacitus as the southern neighbor of the Frisians.

Since the arrival of Drusus (12 BC), they were allied with Rome, but took part in the rebellion under Arminius ( AD 9 ), but were punished by Germanicus it. During the reign of Emperor Nero ( after 59 ) they were expelled by the Chauken from their homes and wiped out by other Germanic tribes mostly. Around the middle of the 4th century, the rest of the Ampsivarier seems to have been associated with the Franks. The late antique historian Sulpicius Alexander mentioned the Ampsivarier in the context of fighting between the Romans and the Franks end of the 4th century.
