Ampus

Ampus is a commune with 927 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur; it belongs to the district of Draguignan Draguignan and Canton.

Geography

Ampus located 14 kilometers north of Draguignan at an altitude of 600 m above sea level. Not far away is the Nartubytal with the Gorges de Château Double and slightly to the north of Lac Sainte -Croix and the Gorges du Verdon.

Two-thirds of the community district consist of mostly forested mountains, of which exceed some of the 1,000 -meter limit and mostly belong to the military area Plan de Canjuers, or from a slope that is leading down into the deeply cut valley of the Nartuby and ordered with olive groves. The remaining third is cultivated highlands between 600 and 700 m above sea level, is operated on the agriculture and the village is located.

Overall, three-quarters of the area is forested, mostly with oak forests, partly with pine forests. In the oak forests of the area grows black truffles.

History

The name Ampus goes back to the Latin emporium ( market). In Roman times, was held an important market on the plane.
