Amriswil

Amriswil is a municipality in the district of Arbon in the canton of Thurgau in Switzerland.

Geography

It is located between Weinfelden and Arbon and novel horn near the Lake Constance and the city of St. Gallen.

Name

799 Amriswil is first mentioned under the name Amalgeriswilare. It is an Alemannic word meaning " hamlet of Amalger ". Amalger is expected to be a proper name. "ger" means spear, which means " amal " is unclear, but is presumed "fight".

History

Probably already existed in Roman times, a Roman road that ran from Vitudurum (Upper Winterthur) by the present territory of Amriswil to Arbor Felix ( Arbon ).

1408 was a chapel to be built in 1350, mentioned in Amergaswile. With the establishment of the canton in 1803 Amriswil was a municipality. Schocherswil belongs since 1997 to the municipality Amriswil (previously to Zihlschlacht Sitter village).

Amriswil is a transport hub. The main street of Roman horn 14 to Frauenfeld, as well as the roads to Arbon, St. Gallen, Kreuzlingen, Bischofszell meet in Amriswil. The Intercity route novel Horn Zurich stop here. The municipality has a bus line network.

Attractions

Located in the village is a large Reformed Church is emphasized in neo-Gothic style. With 75m Amriswil has the highest church tower in the canton of Thurgau. The community house with the square forms a unit. The Catholic Church of St. Stefan of 1939 is one of the first modern church of the canton of Thurgau.
