Geography
Geographical location
The majority of the urban area stretches along the north bank of the Mohawk River. Only the port of the city, Port Jackson, located on the southern shore.

The City of Amsterdam is located within the Town of Amsterdam, is to this but not belonging. The neighboring districts of Amsterdam Town Fort Johnson in the west and Hagaman in the Northeast.
History
The City of Amsterdam has its origins in a settlement called Veedersburgh. Based on the original name of New York City, you named it after Amsterdam, the Dutch capital. 1830 gave one it town.

The south of the river running highway I- 90 connects Amsterdam with New York's capital Albany in the east ( 57 km) and Syracuse in the west ( 185 km).
