Amy Gillett

Amy Gillett, born safe ( born January 9, 1976 in Adelaide, † 18 July 2005 Zadelsdorf ), was an Australian rower and cyclist.

As a rower Amy Safe participated in the Women's eight at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and was fifth. Later, she married her coach Simon Gillett. Because they could not qualify for Sydney 2000, she changed the sport and was cyclist.

Amy Gillett launched since 2000 as a cyclist in road races and was a member of the Australian Women's National Team. In 2002 she was Australian Champion and had especially in Australian cycling their greatest successes. In a training ride in preparation for Thuringia Tour she had an accident on 18 July 2005 on the time trial of Zeulenroda to Auma fatal, sailed as a 18 -year-old rookie driving with her car head-on into their training group. Seriously injured were her teammates Alexis Rhodes and Louise Yaxley, which were to treat injuries sustained severe fractures and treated extensively in Jena, and three other team members. The prologue to the tour was subsequently canceled and replaced by a memorial service on July 19.

After Amy Gillett's death a named after her foundation was established. She supported with donations rehabilitation of the injured with Gillett racers and to promote talented young women cyclists and to promote more safety for cyclists on public roads. The Free State of Thuringia since 2006 creates a " Amy Gillett Prize", awarded in Thuringia tour to a driver with outstanding performance militant or special fairness.

On 18 July 2006, exactly one year after Amy Gillett's death, a memorial stone was unveiled at the accident site.

Furthermore, was baptized name in memory of the former teammate, the rowing eight of the Australian Women's Team at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing on Gillett.
