Anaa

Anaa is an atoll in the Tuamotu archipelago northwest of French Polynesia. The atoll is located 250 km east of Tahiti and 60 kilometers southwest of Tahanea Atoll. Together with the north-eastern atolls Faaite, Motutunga and Tahanea forms of the same Anaa Anaa French Polynesian community.

The oval- shaped, elongated atoll is about 29 kilometers long and up to seven kilometers wide. The total area of approximately 130 km ² is occupied mostly by the central lagoon; the small land area of ​​Anaa (38 km ²) consists of nine major Motus and numerous smaller sandbanks.

History

The atoll is best known for his ferocious warriors in the 17th century. James Cook discovered the island in 1769, he called it island chain due to its shape. On November 1, 1772, the atoll was also hit by Domingo de Boenechea, who gave him the name " Isla de Todos los Santos " (All Saints' Island ).

Middle of the 19th century was a center of the atoll pearl and Kopraproduktion; nearly 2000 people lived on the island. In 1852 there were riots between North American Mormons and French Catholics, which could be resolved only with the French invasion.

1878, 1906 and 1983, the island was devastated by hurricanes. After the last disaster shelters were built for the entire population.

1976 an airfield was created.

Anaa is sparsely populated north. According to the census of 2007 there lived 461 people; Capital is Tukuhora. Other places of the atoll are Temarie, Otepipi, Mania and Tematahoa but which are only occasionally occupied. The residents go today after fishing, Kopraherstellung and pearl production.
