Anaktuvuk Pass is a town and a mountain pass in the North Slope Borough in Alaska in the United States.
Geography
Anaktuvuk Pass is located between the Anaktuvuk River and John River in Gates -of -the- Arctic National Park in the center of the Brooks Range (english Brooks Range). The area has a continental climate with height due to cold summers.
History
The area was inhabited by the Eskimo tribe of Nunamiut that after the phase caused by the influence of western civilization cultural change left the Brooks Range in the 1920s. But in 1938 returned several Nunamiut families from the coast to the mountains of the Brooks Range back. The settlement soon found favor with many other Nunamiut, who settled in the area. 1959 Anaktuvuk Pass was incorporated as a city. A Church of Presbyterian was built in 1966.
Demography
At the time of the census in 2000 ( U.S. Census 2000) had Anaktuvuk Pass 282 inhabitants on a land area of 12.4 km ². The average age was 25.7 years ( national U.S. average: 35.3 years ). The per capita income ( per capita income engl. ) amounted to U.S. $ 15,283 ( U.S. National Average: U.S. $ 21,587 ). 4.4% of residents were with their income below the poverty line ( national U.S. average: 12.4 %). 88.3 % of residents of Anaktuvuk Pass are descendants of Alaska Natives who live in the nationally recognized Indian Reservation Village of Anaktuvuk Pass.
Economy and infrastructure
Due to the isolation of the area, there is little work opportunities in Anaktuvuk Pass. Residents feed primarily on caribou meat and make traditional caribou skin masks or clothing Caribou ago. Some residents go out of town on seasonal work. In Anaktuvuk Pass is a well-known airport, the Anaktuvuk Pass Airport, which ensures year-round access to the city by air. At a public road is not Anaktuvuk Pass to reach. For local transport snowmobiles are used.
