Analytical Profile Index

A Analytical Profile Index ( API analytical profile index ), is a rapid determination system for the identification of bacteria. The test is based on the classical physiological testing procedures, which are clearly defined in their combination and is also called Colorful row.

The API 20E/NE rapid determination system combines some conventional assimilation tests and enables the identification of a limited number of gram-negative enterobacteria and non - enteric bacteria. Test systems are accommodated in small reaction vessels 20 which contain the substrates. Meaningful identifications can be carried out with pure cultures.

For the differentiation of non- enteric bacteria Enterobacter is tested by means of the oxidase test for the presence of cytochrome C oxidase. Enterobacteriaceae are oxidase negative.

The identification of opportunities by means of this test are limited, because the system is only designed for the rapid identification of clinically relevant bacteria. Correspondingly, only these organisms can be identified by their metabolic reactions.
