Nordwestanatolische lizard ( Anatololacerta anatolica )

The Nordwestanatolische lizard ( Anatololacerta anatolica ) is one of the genuine lizards.

Features

The Nordwestanatolische lizard is a powerfully built and medium-sized lizard. It can reach a total length up to about 24 centimeters. The head is narrow. The small dorsal scales are not keeled. The top is brownish or brownish- gray. The edges appear darker than the back, as it dark brown, similar to each other partly have a mesh pattern merging spots. Bright spots with dark border may be present on the back and flanks now and then. The underside is whitish colored and pale. In adult specimens the throat is colored bright orange to brick red or whitish. The throats of young animals, however, are whitish. The tails of the pups are turquoise blue.

Occurrence

The species occurs from sea level to altitudes of 1700 m MSL. They settled prefers rocky and well vegetated habitats. The Nordwestanatolische lizard is also found in the human environment, such as in gardens, villages and ruins.

Way of life

Over the life of the North West Anatolian lizard there is little information. The females lay in the summer from one consisting of 3-8 eggs eggs.

System

There are two subspecies:

  • Anatololacerta anatolica ssp. aegaea has on both sides a bright, wide longitudinal stripe running from the head along the hull at the delimitation between flanks and back up to the tail. The strip may have interruptions. This subspecies occurs on the Dilek Peninsula in Turkey and on the Greek island of Samos.
  • Anatololacerta anatolica ssp. anatolica is the nominate form. The longitudinal strip is her only of drop-shaped spots. It is to be found in the northern Aegean region in northwest Turkey.

Threats and conservation

The species is classified by the IUCN as endangered not (Least Concern ).
