Anatolijs Gorbunovs

Anatoliy Gorbunovs (Russian Анатолий Валерианович Горбунов, translit Anatoly Gorbunov Walerianowitsch, . Born February 10, 1942 in Pilda, county Riga, Latvia) is a Latvian politician.

Life

From 1974 to 1988 held Anatoliy Gorbunovs various positions in the Communist Party of the Latvian SSR, as the most senior of the secretary of the Central Committee. In contrast to the vast majority in the party Gorbunovs supported the Latvian independence movement.

From 1988 to 1995 he was Speaker of the Latvian Parliament, first of the Supreme Soviet of the Latvian SSR, then, after independence in 1991, the Saeima. As Speaker of Parliament Gorbunovs took over the role of head of state until Guntis Ulmanis was elected president.
